Project Overview

The Lebanon, Ohio homeowners who brought us this project had done their homework. They'd researched both vinyl liner and fiberglass pools extensively before reaching out, and they came into the consultation with smart, specific questions. They wanted to understand the real long-term cost differences, not just the upfront price — and they wanted a company that would give them honest answers rather than just push the more expensive option.

After walking through the comparison together, they chose fiberglass. For their lifestyle — a busy family that wanted to swim and enjoy the pool without spending every weekend on maintenance — it was the right call. Fiberglass surfaces are smooth, non-porous, and naturally resistant to algae in a way that vinyl liner pools simply aren't. Over time, that translates to less chemical usage, less cleaning, and lower overall operating costs.

Why Fiberglass Was the Right Fit

Fiberglass pools arrive as a single pre-manufactured shell, which means the interior surface is consistent and factory-finished. There's no liner to replace every 10–15 years, no seams to worry about, and the smooth surface is gentle on swimmers' feet and skin. For a family with young kids who are in and out of the pool constantly, that matters.

The trade-off with fiberglass is flexibility in shape — you're choosing from available shell sizes and configurations rather than fully customizing dimensions. In this case, that wasn't an issue. The homeowners found a shell size and shape that fit their yard well and matched the aesthetic they were going for. We sized the excavation precisely to the shell specs and everything came together cleanly.

Site Assessment & Excavation

The Lebanon property was a relatively straightforward dig — flat yard, good soil conditions, no major obstacles. We completed the site assessment, pulled the necessary permits, and had the excavation done efficiently. Because fiberglass shells require precise placement, we took extra care on the leveling and bedding before the shell arrived.

The shell was delivered by truck and set into the excavated area using a crane. This is always a bit of a spectacle for the neighbors — watching a full-size pool shell swing into a backyard from a crane is not something you see every day. The placement went smoothly, and once the shell was set and leveled, we began the backfill process, using a combination of gravel and clean fill to provide proper support around the shell walls.

Plumbing, Equipment & Backfill

With the shell in position, we ran all plumbing lines — return jets, skimmer lines, and main drain — through the shell's pre-formed ports and back to the equipment pad. We used quality Schedule 40 PVC throughout, glued and pressure-tested before any backfill covered the lines. No surprises waiting underground for the next owner.

The equipment package included a variable-speed pump, a high-efficiency cartridge filter, and a salt chlorine generator — a popular choice for fiberglass pool owners because the combination of the smooth shell surface and salt sanitation means the pool essentially takes care of itself with minimal intervention. We also wired a basic LED light package so the pool looks great in the evenings.

Backfill was completed in lifts, compacted carefully to avoid any shifting around the shell over time. This is a step that's easy to rush and easy to do wrong — we don't rush it. Proper backfill is what keeps a fiberglass shell from flexing or shifting over years of freeze-thaw cycles in Ohio winters.

Water Fill & Final Walkthrough

Once equipment was connected and all plumbing tested clean, we began filling the pool. We tested the water chemistry as the pool reached capacity, dialing in the salt levels, pH, alkalinity, and calcium hardness so the water was perfectly balanced by the time the homeowners were ready to swim. We also walked them through the automation system and salt generator controls so they felt fully comfortable managing the pool on their own going forward.

We don't hand over a pool and disappear. We stay until the homeowners understand how everything works, and we make ourselves available for follow-up questions during that first season. That's just how we operate.

The Result

The Lebanon family had their pool ready earlier than expected and have been thrilled with how little day-to-day attention it requires. The salt system keeps the water clean and soft, the variable-speed pump runs quietly on a timer, and the fiberglass surface has stayed bright and clean all season with minimal effort on their part.

This is exactly the kind of result that fiberglass is built to deliver — a beautiful, low-maintenance pool that fits seamlessly into a busy family's life. If you're weighing your options and wondering whether fiberglass might be the right fit for your property, give us a call and we'll walk you through it honestly.
